Internet Restrictions

Do you like to post on facebook?

Is Google your favourite seach tool?

You may need to check it these will work when you travel.

Countries that may be a problem

Google services are restricted in China, Crimea, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria and almost all Arab countries .

Facebook is restricted in China, Iran, and North Korea.

This is known as ‘Geo Blocking’.

Many different restrictions can apply in other countries

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)

One way around the problem of Geo Blocking is to use a VPN.

These use a type of internet protocol called tunneling that means you are connected to a ‘private network’ in another country.

There are lots of VPN providers for both phones and computers including free services which tend to be basic, and better quality services that you need to pay for.

Some countries do look to block the more popular, usually free, VPNs.

I have successfully used a VPN service in China and could usually, but not always, use facebook and access my gmail account.

Just remember to do some research before you travel.

Once you arrive in a country which uses Geo Blocking you may have problems in setting up a VPN.
