Over the years I have used a number of different combinations of ‘SIM Cards’ and ‘eSIMs’ when travelling.
Here is how I currently manage communications.
eSIM
I currently use an eSIM for communication on my home countries network. (based in Australia I use BOOST)
When I am overseas this allows me to receive text messages sent to my phone.
This can be really useful when using your credit, or debit card, to make advance booking as you nearly always have to respond to a text message.
Travel SIM Card
I have found pre-purchasing a travel SIM Card works best for me because:
- It is usually cheaper than Global Roaming with an ESim.
- I have internet access as soon as I get off the plane. This is a real advantage as I am finding that with Evisas I have needed internet access during immigation, but phone cards are often not available until after immigation
- With a regional card I don’t have to buy a new local card if I am travelling to multiple countries.
Trivia
Until I started this post although I have been using the acronym SIM I did not o what it stood for.
Now we both know it stands for: Subscriber Identity/Identification Module
