According to SkyTrax in 2024 the three big alliances were ranked as follows;
- Star;
- One World;
- Sky Team;
I have been in a number of airline frequent flyer programs over my travels and am currently involved in Star (through Lufthansa) One World (through Qantas) and SkyTeam (through Virgin)
My Preference
One World through Qantas is currently my prefered alliance for flights for the following reasons:
- Living in Australia there are more Qantas flights, and Qantas code share flights available to me, which makes it easier to gain and then keep Status.
- Its easy to collect Qantas Frequent Flyer Points through my credit card and shopping at Woolworths and also stops points expiring.
- Two of the airlines I like and use quite a lot; Finnair, and Cathay Pacific, are part of the alliance.
- I can often book through Qantas to fly Emirates (another good airline) and use points on some flights.
Thats is not to say that the One World alliance is best for you.
I would suggest you check out your home countries major airline first, or even airlines with a base at your home airport, as more flights, and ease of points collecting, are key considerations.
For example if I lived in Singapore I would probably prefer Star Alliance through the KrisFlyer program of Singapore Airlines.
