Have you tried eSIMs for your phone?
What Are eSIMs
Many mobile phones now have the facility to use an electronic SIM rather than a SIM card.
You can get a eSIM by downloading an app from the supplier and following the instructions within the app
Once the eSIM is installed you can make and receive calls, and access mobile data, as easily as using a traditional SIM card.
At the moment (July 2024) not every telecom provider has an ESIM facility.
Using A Travel eSIM With Your Home Country SIM Card
This method was my first try with e SIM.
eSIMs are available both for individual countries and for regions such as Europe.
You can leave your home country SIM in the phone, but set your phone to use the eSIM for calls, and data, while overseas.
This has the advantage that it is fairly easy to receive SMS messages while overseas (can be handy when your bank or credit provider wants to send a check message when you are booking something)
A disadvantage I have found is that the Travel eSIMs seem quite expensive compared with the price of a local SIM card.
Using Your Home Country eSIM With A Local SIM Card
This is the way I am currently trialling.
I have currently got a eSIM (from Boost mobile) which was really easy to install and is working well in Australia.
Next time I go overseas I will be buying a local SIM card at the airport! and will be updating this post to let you know how I go.
Disclaimer: I have not been paid for mentioning ‘Boost Mobile‘ in this post.
